Fazed by the English Language's Quirks
by Geoff Tan for Mypaper, 23 July 2012

I have always been intrigued by the English language and its idiosyncrasies.

It is certainly not as simple and straightforward as it appears to be. I have often stumbled over its inconsistencies and, till today, cannot figure out why certain things are the way they are.

My former boss recently sent me an e-mail message about the more interesting quirks of English.

For example, have you ever wondered why the plural of ox is not oxes, but the plural of box is boxes? Or why the plural of mouse is mice, but that of house is not hice?

I am sure you will agree that your left foot and your right foot constitute your feet. But why are one's left boot and right boot not referred to as one's beet?

And if one of those small, whitish structures in your mouth is a tooth, and many are known as teeth, then why is the the plural of booth not beeth? Beats me!

Now, let's talk about gender. We have all learnt that the masculine pronouns are he, his and him. Can someone tell me why the respective feminine equivalents are she, but not shis and shim?

English is indeed a weird language, with sometimes-funny twists and turns.

Have you ever wondered why an eggplant is so named, when there is no egg in it? And a hamburger contains absolutely no ham.

Why is a boxing ring called a ring when it is, in fact, a square? And why is a guinea pig so named when it is neither from Guinea nor a pig? And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, while grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

If you get my drift, you might then ask, if a vegetarian eats vegetables, then what does a humanitarian eat? Or, why do noses run and feet smell?

On the issue of similarities and differences, why do a slim chance and a fat chance mean the same thing, while a wise man and a wise guy are nowhere close in terms of meaning?

Writing all this has made me even more confused about the creative licence that the English language has been granted.

How can it be that, when the stars are out, they are visible but, when the lights are out, they are invisible?

It's time for a stiff drink!

Apa artinya 'vice versa'?

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Sabtu, 29 Oktober 2011

Apa artinya 'vice versa'?

Contohnya:
She hates him and vice versa. (Dia membencinya dan begitu pula sebaliknya).
Fish can't live where we are most comfortable, and vice versa.
I can go to Bali - Jakarta vice versa within 1 day to make this happened.

Happiness, Sadness & Knowledge

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Minggu, 14 Agustus 2011

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love. Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.

When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.

Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."

Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh ... Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"

Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.

Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"

"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."

Men vs Women and Computers

Posted by Rizqi Minggu, 07 Agustus 2011

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

"House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa".

"Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz.."

A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be
a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computadora"), because:

  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
  3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
  4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

(THIS GETS BETTER!)

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ("el computador"), because:
  1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
  2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
  3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
  4. As soon as you commit to one,you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

.... the women won.

  • feminine  (fm-nn) adj.
    • 1. Of or relating to women or girls. 2. Characterized by or possessing qualities generally attributed to a woman.
  • masculine  (msky-ln) adj. :
    • 1. Of or relating to men or boys; male.2. Suggestive or characteristic of a man; mannish.

Terjemahan "ikatan dinas" & "program magang"

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Selasa, 28 Juni 2011

Dear all,

I need help to translate "Ikatan Dinas", and "Program magang" is that "Official
bond" and "Internship Program"? maybe you have another familiar word to put in
on the application letter.

and how to call the "Magang" participant or "Ikatan Dinas" participant?

Many company have their own term for 'magang'. Company A called Internship Program, while company B called Apprenticeship Program.

Apprentice itself defined as "a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages". (this is from google which reflect the actual condition, but it applies on many area not just trading. )

I quote from Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged

apprentice [əˈprɛntɪs]
1. someone who works for a skilled or
qualified person in order to learn a trade or profession, esp for a recognized period
Same definition there. At this point, I guess apprenticeship program is the correct one. :)

Intern itself defined by The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, as below:

in·tern also in·terne
n.
a. A student or a recent graduate undergoing supervised practical training.

Wikipedia describe internship as a system of on-the-job training for white-collar jobs, similar to an apprenticeship. Interns are usually college or university students, but they can also be high school students or post graduate adults seeking skills for a new career.

Both are correct, although some company may called "On Job Training" also. :)

"Management Trainee Program" is more less same in reality.

I don't know about 'ikatan dinas'. Never heard the translation.

But, yes... it's applied on non-goverment environtment as well. Usually, it's part of education Company-Sponsored Program. Employees shall give their service in the company for certain period after finishing the education.

I don't know what is the correct term for that kind of situation.

[Review Singkat] Kamus Inggris Online

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Senin, 20 Juni 2011

Saya sendiri ga terlalu suka pake kamus Indonesia – Inggris (vice versa) saja.

Be careful. :)

Mungkin cocok buat mahasiswa sastra inggris, bukan engineer kayak saya.

Menggunakan awalan "a" dan "an" dalam bahasa inggris.

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Sabtu, 06 November 2010

Menggunakan awalan "a" dan "an" dalam bahasa inggris.

Sering orang menghafal awalan "a" dan "an" untuk singular noun (kata benda tunggal) dengan menghafal huruf pertama kata benda tersebut.
"a" digunakan untuk kata benda dengan awalan konsonan, sedangkan "an" digunakan untuk kata benda dengan awalan huruf vokal, a,i,u,e,o.

Perbedaannya dengan awalan "the" adalah "the" digunakan untuk merujuk pada benda tertentu. Sudah pasti.

Contoh:

  1. "My son wants a toy for his birthday present." (awalan "a" ditaruh di depan "toy")
  2. "Please, somebody call an ambulance!" (awalan "an" di depan "ambulance")
  3. "When I was at the zoo, I saw an elephant! and a monkey" (awalan "an" untuk "elephant", dan "a" untuk "monkey").

Padahal itu tidak selalu benar. Ingat, bahwa penggunaan "a" dan "an" tergantung dari:
  • "a" untuk singular noun yang diawali dengan huruf konsonan, contoh: a boy; a car; a bike; a zoo; a dog
  • "a" untuk singular noun yang diawali dengan consonant sound (bunyi konsonan): a university (dibaca sounds like 'yu-ni-ver-si-ty,' diawali dengan bunyi "y", maka 'a' digunakan); contoh lain : a user; a unicycle
  • "an" untuk singular noun yang diawali dengan bunyi vowel, contoh: an elephant; an egg; an apple; an idiot; an orphan
  • dalam kasus tertentu, dimana "h" diucapkan, seperti "historical," maka gunakan "an". contoh: An historical event is worth recording.

  • An MSDS (material safety data sheet) was used to record the data. (pake "an" karena bunyinya adalah "em-es-di-es")
  • An SPCC plan (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plan) will help us prepare for the worst.

Jika ada kata sifat ("an adjective"), maka penggunaan "a" dan "an" tergantung dari bunyi awalan dari kata sifat tersebut.

* a rotten apple
* an unusual problem
* a European country (diucapkan 'yer-o-pi-an,' dimulai dengan bunyi konsonan "y")

Gimana cara mengucapkan dengan benar (Snack and Snake)

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Rabu, 18 Agustus 2010

how to say snack and snake, then eleven and elephant correctly!

Wah... susah bener ya. Hampir2 mirip bunyinya, tapi pasti ada bedanya. Gimana membedakan 2 huruf mati dibelakang kata snake dan snack?

  • Snack diucapkan seperti mengucapkan "back"
  • Snake diucapkan seperti "fake"(palsu)

In time dan On time, apa bedanya ya?

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Jumat, 16 April 2010

in time ~ 1. Before a time limit expires; 2. Within an indefinite time; eventually

Please finish this report in time since I will present it in front of board of director tomorrow 8 AM. Can you imagine if we cannot make it on 7 AM?

on time ~ 1. According to schedule; punctual or punctually; 2. By paying in installments.
Harus tepat waktu. Requirementnya ketat banget. Guru saya bilang, If I said I’ll meet you there on 7, and you come 10 minutes earlier and don’t find me, I’m not breaking my promise. If I come at 7, it means I’m on time.”
Kalo telat 30 detik hingga 1 menit masih bisa ditoleransi. Jika lebih? Wah, saya ngga berani jamin deh. Orang bule terkenal tepat waktu dan ga pake jam karet.

Dalam prakteknya, saya akan selalu menyelesaikan tugas saya sebelum tenggat dan datang sebelum waktu yang dijanjikan, tidak peduli apakah saya diminta on time ato in time. :)

Mana yang bener: Thanks in Advance ato Thanks Before?

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Jumat, 09 April 2010

Tanya kanan kiri, ternyata artinya (kira-kira), "Terima Kasih Sebelumnya". What a such a nice closing for requisition letter.

Sebagai kata kerja sifat (adjecive) kata ini mempunyai arti, (1) Made or given ahead of time, example: an advance payment. 2. Going before, in front, or forward.

Sedangkan dalam idioms, in advance, memberikan arti Ahead of time; beforehand, sebelumnya.

Beda dengan "before" ato sebelumnya (juga). Before adalah kata keterangan (adverb) yang mempunyai arti (1) Earlier in time, example: They called me the day before, (2) In front; ahead.

Misalnya, They promised me to meet on Sunday, but they called me the day before.

So, next time please say "Thanks in advance" instead of "Thanks Before".

:)

Tentang Cuti

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Minggu, 17 Januari 2010

Di tempat saya bekerja, cuti tahunan berarti Annual Leave. Jika ingin minta ijin cuti tinggal bilang, "Bos, I want to take my annual leave from (sebutkan dari tanggal berapa) until (sampe tanggal berapa)". Ato, "Bos, I want to take a vacation for (sebutkan berapa hari) and back to work on (sebutkan tanggal kembali kerja)".

Menyebutkan alasan.
Jika untuk keperluan keluarga, tinggal tambahkan saja alasannya. "Bos, I want a leave for few days because my sister got married, is it OK with you?". Contoh lain, "Bos, I have to go for few days since my wife in hospital and will deliver our baby". Bisa juga, "Is it OK with you if I'm not coming today? I'm not feeling very well today".
Bisa juga, "Bos, I want to take leave for 2 or 3 days for family matter/family business".

Cuti bersama

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Selasa, 29 Desember 2009

Province (Headed by Governor)
Regency (Headed by Regent)/City (headed by Major)
Subdistrict (Headed by Camat) ... I've told you, there's no such thing on UK. Keep it that way.
Village (Headed by Lurah/Head of Desa)

Demi kemudahan, katanya. Ntar kalo bulenya balesin surat lagi ke sini, biar ga salah alamat. Nah… kan? Pak posnya bisa2 juga bingung… :d

Oxford Word of the Year 2009: Unfriend

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Sabtu, 26 Desember 2009

Birds are singing, the sun is shining and I am joyful first thing in the morning without caffeine. Why you ask? Because it is Word of the Year time (or WOTY as we refer to it around the office). Every year the New Oxford American Dictionary prepares for the holidays by making its biggest announcement of the year. This announcement is usually applauded by some and derided by others and the ongoing conversation it sparks is always a lot of fun, so I encourage you to let us know what you think in the comments.

Without further ado, the 2009 Word of the Year is: unfriend.

unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.

As in, “I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.”

“It has both currency and potential longevity,” notes Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford’s US dictionary program. “In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year. Most “un-” prefixed words are adjectives (unacceptable, unpleasant), and there are certainly some familiar “un-” verbs (uncap, unpack), but “unfriend” is different from the norm. It assumes a verb sense of “friend” that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!). Unfriend has real lex-appeal.”

Wondering what other new words were considered for the New Oxford American Dictionary 2009 Word of the Year? Check out the list below.

Monggo disimak.

Bentuk kombinasi dari kata Of, have, and to
Kata 'of', 'have' dan 'to' cenderung diucapkan seperti huruf 'a' (a schwa [ə]). Misalnya "I could of..." padahal yang bener adalah "I could have..." ato "I could've".

* could have: [ˈkʊɾə], coulda
* must have: [ˈmʌstə], musta
* should have: [ˈʃʊɾə], shoulda
* would have: [ˈwʊɾə], woulda
* it would / it would have: [ˈɪɾə], itta

* kind of: [ˈkaɪɾ̃ə], kinda
* out of: [ˈaʊɾə], outta
* sort of: [ˈsɔɹɾə], sorta

* going to: [ˈɡʌnə], gonna
* got to: [ˈɡɑɾə], gotta
* have to: [ˈhæftə], hafta
* want to: [ˈwɑɾ̃ə], wanna
* ought to : oughta

Varian dari kata "You"
"You" diucapkan mendekati [jə] (kadang ditulis "ya"); kadang juga tergantung konsonan di depannya, contohnya: (/t/ + /jə/ = [tʃə], and /d/ + /jə/ = [dʒə])

* did you: [ˈdɪdʒə], didja
* did you / do you: [ˈdʒə], d'ya
* don't you: [ˈdoʊntʃə], doncha
* got you: [ˈɡɑtʃə], gotcha
* get you / get your: [ˈɡɛtʃə], getcha
* would you: [ˈwʊdʒə], wouldja

Kata lainnya
* give me: [ˈɡɪmi], gimme
* is he: [ˈɪzi], izee
* is it: [zɪt], ’zit
* isn't it: innit
* let me: [ˈlɛmi], lemme
* don't know: [dəˈnoʊ], dunno
* probably: [ˈpɹɑli], probly
* want a: [ˈwɑɾ̃ə], wanna
* what is that: [ˌwʌˈsæt], wussat
* what is up: [wəˈsʌp], wassup
* what is up: [sʌp], ’sup
* what are you: [ˈwʌtʃə], whatcha
* what do you: [ˈwʌɾəjə], whaddaya
* you all: [jɑl], y’all

Wanna, Gonna, Gotta, Perkenalan dengan reduced forms

Posted by admin-ngenglishyuk Selasa, 24 November 2009

And what I found was speed of speech was statistically significant as a cause for reduced forms, not informality. Though in informal speech we tend to speak more quickly, and so we think it's the informality, but actually it's the speed of speech."

Contoh:
  • What you wanna do now? (Instead of: What do you want to do now?)
  • What we gonna do now? (= What are we going to do now?)
  • We're gonna carry on and try and get there before dark.
Gotta adalah bentuk pendek dari 'have got to' ato bentuk alternatif secara informal untuk 'to have to' ato 'must' ato harus (ID).
  • A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do
  • I gotta / I've gotta phone home right now. My mum'll be worried.
Masih dari situs yang sama, kita mengetahui bahwa kata baru whaddaya dikembangkan dari what do you. Whaddaya wanna do adalah versi cepat dari What do you want to do.

Wannabee adalah kata baru yang diturunkan dari want to be.
'A wannabee' digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan seseorang yang ingin meniru sang idola.
  • Scores of Britney Spears wannabees raided the shops where she had bought her latest outfit.
Dunno sama dengan I don't know.
  • Are you going to college when you leave school? ~ Dunno!
  • Will you quit your job if they re-locate to Manchester? ~Dunno!

Complaining to Costumer Service

(I got it from one of my friend. I don't know whether it's true story or not. Enjoy ! ) ^_^

There's always one. This has got to be one of the funniest things in a long time. I think this guy should have been promoted, not fired. This is a true story from the Word Perfect Helpline, which was transcribed from a recording monitoring the customer care department. Needless to say the Help Desk employee was fired; however, he/she is currently suing the Word Perfect organization for "Termination without Cause".

Actual dialogue of a former WordPerfect Customer Support employee. Now I know why they record these conversations!

Operator: "Ridge Hall, computer assistance; may I help you?"
Caller: "Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."
Operator: "What sort of trouble??"
Caller: "Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away."
Operator: "Went away?"
Caller: "They disappeared."
Operator: "Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"
Caller: "Nothing."
Operator: "Nothing??"
Caller: "It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."
Operator: "Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out??"
Caller: "How do I tell?"
Operator: "Can you see the C: prompt on the screen??"
Caller: "What's a sea-prompt?"
Operator: "Never mind, can you move your cursor around the screen?"
Caller: "There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything I type."
Operator: "Does your monitor have a power indicator??"
Caller: "What's a monitor?"
Operator: "It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on??"
Caller: "I don't know."
Operator: "Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that??"
Caller: "Yes, I think so."
Operator: "Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall.
Caller: "Yes, it is."
Operator: "When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one??"
Caller: "No."
Operator: "Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."
Caller: "Okay, here it is."
Operator: "Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."
Caller: "I can't reach."
Operator: "Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is??"
Caller: "No."
Operator: "Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over??"
Caller: "Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle - it's because it's dark."
Operator: "Dark??"
Caller: "Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."
Operator: "Well, turn on the office light then."
Caller: "I can't."
Operator: "No? Why not??"
Caller: "Because there's a power failure."
Operator: "A power...................................... A power failure? Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now.
Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in??"
Caller: "Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."
Operator: "Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."
Caller: "Really? Is it that bad?"
Operator: "Yes, I'm afraid it is."
Caller: "Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them??"
Operator: "Tell them you're too f*%king stupid to own a computer!!!!!"
