Gerund Part II

Posted by Rizqi Minggu, 14 Juni 2009

Posting ini ngelanjutin posting sebelumnya tentang Gerund. Kali ini tentang penempatan gerund dalam sebuah kalimat.
  1. Setelah phrasal verbs dimana terdiri dari kata kerja (verb) dan preposisi (preposition) ato kata keterangan (adverb). Contoh phrasal verbs adalah: to look forward to, to give up, to be for/against, to take to, to put off, to keep on:
I look forward to hearing from you soon. (misalnya dalam akhir surat)
He kept on asking for money.
    NOTE:
Ada beberapa phrasal verbs yang memasukkan unsur "to" sebagai preposition bukan sebagai to infinitive. Contohnya adalah kalimat pertama. Soal ini, bisa kita bicarakan dalam posting yang lain.
  2. Dalam Compound Nouns (=kumpulan kata benda yang memberi arti baru)
    Contoh: a driving lesson, a swimming pool, bird-watching, train-spotting.
Sangat jelas bahwa arti dari kata2 diatas dalam sebuah kumpulan kata.
Example: The pool is not swimming, it is a pool for swimming in.
  3. Setelah ekspresi:
can’t help, can’t stand, it’s no use/good, and the adjective worth:
    Contoh:
The elephant couldn’t help falling in love with the mouse.
I cant stand being stuck in traffic jams.
It’s no use/good trying to escape.
It might be worth phoning the station to check the time of the train.
